MapleStory Classic: Week-One Inflation and the Case for Market Stabilisation

MapleStory Classic World's first week has been a rollercoaster for the in-game economy. Mesos have rapidly lost purchasing power against certain desirable items, with real-money trading (RMT), bot activity and abnormal meso generation raising concerns about how sustainable current prices are.

But is this the beginning of runaway inflation, or simply the growing pains of a new economy? My expectation is that the second week will bring greater market stability, although not every item will become cheaper.

Week One: A Market in Shock

Community price tracking has revealed some remarkable movements. Inventory expansions reportedly rose from around 5,000 mesos to 20,000–25,000 within four days. Claw Attack 60% scrolls reportedly climbed from approximately 20,000 mesos on day one to more than 100,000. Meanwhile, Garnet ore fell from 4,000–5,000 mesos to below 1,000, demonstrating that inflation has not affected every item equally.

Several factors are contributing to these movements. Players are competing for scarce upgrades, NX items and desirable scrolls, while RMT allows some buyers to obtain purchasing power beyond their ordinary in-game earnings. Botting and abnormal meso generation may add further currency to circulation, potentially pushing prices upwards faster than legitimate players can earn.

Nexon has also reported banning 3000+ accounts for botting and other abnormal gameplay. This demonstrates that enforcement is taking place, although it does not establish how much illicit currency remains in circulation or how effectively future inflation will be contained.

Week Two: The Case for Stabilisation

I expect the market to begin settling over the next week, particularly for common equipment, ores and crafting materials.

The reasoning is straightforward: as more players farm, level and participate in trading, supply increases. Items that initially commanded premium prices because few were available should face greater competition among sellers. Recent community discussions already suggest that many ordinary items and materials are losing value, even as popular scrolls and NX items continue rising.

As the initial rush subsides, buyers may also become more selective. Sellers who previously relied on launch-day urgency will need to adjust their expectations, and asking prices that once seemed achievable may no longer translate into completed sales.

However, stabilisation does not necessarily mean a universal price decline. Popular attack scrolls, throwing stars and other sought-after upgrades could remain expensive if demand from progressing players continues to exceed supply. NX items may also behave differently from ordinary equipment because their usefulness and desirability extend beyond immediate levelling needs.

The Biggest Risk: Mesos Entering Too Quickly

The main threat to stabilisation is continued growth in the supply of mesos. If botting, exploits or RMT-linked currency generation continues unchecked, sellers may keep raising prices to reflect the declining purchasing power of their earnings.

Developer enforcement will therefore matter, alongside the balance between currency generation and currency sinks. More players and more drops can stabilise individual item prices, but they will not necessarily solve persistent monetary inflation.

My Forecast

My base expectation is that week two will bring less volatility, greater price discovery and diverging trends across item categories. Common gear and abundant materials should face downward pressure as supply grows, while scarce, high-demand upgrades may retain their premiums.

The best indicators to watch are completed sales rather than shop listings, changes in the number of competing sellers, and whether price increases are spreading across ordinary goods or remaining concentrated in desirable items.

Week one established the shock. Week two should reveal whether the market can begin finding its balance.
